Waiter knows my life, and eloquently writes for the tipped employee.

Explosion of the New Gilded Age

I just about cried at that one. I remember when Starbucks was the only place that would hire me, and I loved working there. However, any money I made went to bills and payments before the check even came, and tips were for groceries.

Had I not had family to help out, some weeks, I'd have gone without groceries. My heart goes out to those with similar jobs during this time, especially ones without families to help.

I've been leaving bigger tips lately when I go out to eat or get coffee somewhere, to try and offset the tightening of everyone else's belts when it comes to gratuity. I hope people loosen up more before Christmas.

when things are down,as they are now.... tipped employees receive your tips with humility and thanks ... believe me, I know!

My comment is #11 on that page. I never get to stay in hotels where there is any service staff, so I'm never in a position to tip bellhops. I would if I did, though.
